What is a primary?

A primary election is the first step in choosing who will run for governor. Right now, five people want to be the Republican candidate for governor.

In the primary, voters pick their favorite person from one party. The person who gets the most votes in their party becomes that party’s official candidate. This narrows the field down to one main candidate from each party.

Then, in the general election in November, those main candidates run against each other. Voters choose who will actually become the next governor.

This process gives everyday Iowans a direct voice in selecting their party’s candidate before the final choice in November.
Iowa’s primary election is on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
You may vote early in person any day until June 2nd!
